Powerful possums here in Killarney

Possum magic at a local sub-station brought down power to 12,000 homes yesterday.

Ausgrid said the possum came into contact with two live parts of the electricity network near a large substation at Killarney Heights and acted as a conductor, creating a short-circuit and triggering the networks's "safety" mechanism about 4:30am.

Power was restored to the final houses before 8am but not after amusing scenes of camping stoves being put to use in kitchens around the suburb.

The possum, "sparky", did not survive.
